My mom encouraged me to read this book when I was a teenager. I enjoyed it but not as much as I did this time at age 69 after having been married and given birth. This book is quite progressive considering the fact that the story takes place in the 1920's but the heroine, Annie, has an interest beyond hearth and home. She is an aspiring writer. Feminists will rail against the fact that only Carl, her husband, receives higher education, although Annie is permitted to audit some English classes (having had only an 8th-grade education). I think it's a beautiful story of a young couple's first year of marriage with all the joys and blessings, trials and tribulations. Annie is the most resourceful, loving, people-oriented person you might ever want to meet. She's somewhat naive--I'm reminded of the Tammy movies from the fifties when a young woman's naivete was considered part of her charm. It was enjoyable for me to read a book I read as a teenager, as I was able to understand so much more now after having led a full life. I recommend rereading books one has read as a teenager.

The first time I read Betty Smith's "Joy In The Morning" was in the late 80's...and I haven't been able to put it down since. I have read it over and over throughout the years. When I need an adrenalin shot of faith and hope, I grab Smith's book, and, after only a few pages in, I am instantly reminded that there truly is "Joy In The Morning". This is one of those books where you want to call up the author and say, "Thank You".
I love Betty Smith! I read this novel several times in high school for pleasure, and when I saw it for sale on , I knew I wanted to read it again and add it to my personal collection. The storyline is so sweet, and the characters are so easy to love. I would highly recommend this book to anyone, from teens to seniors! Excellent classic!
This is a book which follows the young couple thru the most difficult part of setting up their newlywed life.
And the birth of their first child. Shows how hard work and a thirst for education makes them come out winners.
Its an uplifting book for sure! No violence, no murders, no nasty stuff, a very nice relaxing read. Compassion and love comes out on top!
Pretty much what it was back in their age, work hard, get rewarded, and enjoy life as it comes along.

In the Elizabethan era Christopher Marlowe wrote the famous line "Comparisons are Odious." However, when an author such as Betty Smith is so famous for one work, comparisons are very difficult to avoid. A Tree Grows in Brooklyn was such a powerful novel that anyone who has ever read it is going to find it difficult to read Joy in the Morning without at least being vaguely reminded of the first book and possibly just a little disappointed in this one.
Joy in the Morning is the story of Annie, who leaves Brooklyn just after her 18th birthday to marry Carl, a young law student at a Midwestern university. The first year of their marriage is the stuff of subtle drama as Annie and Carl work out their cultural and educational differences.
The work is strongly autobiographical. Like Annie, Betty Smith left school at the age of 14 to work in factories and retail. Like Annie, Betty Smith (then Wehmer) left Brooklyn for the Midwest at age 18. At Ann Arbor, Michigan, she married George Smith, a young law student. In the book Annie is a writer trying to find her voice, and finds it in playwriting. Betty Smith was also a playwright-she attended Yale Drama School and had over 70 plays under belt before she wrote her first novel.
With that much stage experience, it is no wonder that Betty Smith is a virtuoso of both pace and dialogue. The underlying structure of Joy in the Morning is every bit as well-crafted as A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. But it is every bit as different from the earlier work as a college town in the Midwest is from New York City. It is lighter, more sentimental, and less condensed. The grit of the Brooklyn streets is softened here. Though there are allusions to her stepfather's behavior in her bedroom being part of the reason Annie fled Brooklyn, Smith doesn't show the reader anything truly ugly as she did with Nolan's drinking and death in A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Joy in the Morning is simply a kinder, gentler read, a sweet story about the first year of marriage in a new town.
I would have enjoyed this book had it not been by Betty Smith. Having just read A Tree Grows in Brooklyn, I couldn't wait to read her other two books, but I really wasn't wowed by this one. It was very underwhelming. It didn't have the endearing memories or the fluidity of A Tree Grows in Brooklyn. If I were without those high expectations, I would have enjoyed it more, but I wouldn't recommend it to people who are looking for another Tree Grows in Brooklyn. Instead, I would point them to Betty Smith's other book, Maggie Now, which rings truer to the peaceful sentimentality which Brooklyn glowed. Joy in the Morning is a story about two just married students. It's a love story, and it is a good story, just not a great one.
Read this novel in high school, but found it to be much better than "A Tree Grows in Brooklyn", Smith's classic. The story follows Annie, a young woman who marries quite young, moves out to where her husband Carl is going to law school, and follows her maturation as both a young woman and wife. Along the way she even becomes a student, albeit by auditing several classes. This is a classic tale of the struggles of a new marriage.

Re-reading it as an adult, the writing is still as stellar and the story just as fresh. The struggles of young couples transcend time. The extras at the end are worth reading as well, giving greater insight into both the author and the story itself. Definitely worth reading.
