In the Summer of 1143, two visitors arrive at the gates of the Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul bearing a corpse. But another violent death follows in their wake, and Brother Cadfael is called upon to investigate the connection between these two gory events.

The Heretic Apprentice Chronicles Of Brother Cadfael Book 16 edition by Ellis Peters Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Elave returns to Shrewsbury after a lengthy absence. He brings with him Lord William of Lythwood's body, his master, and a beautiful decorative box. It was William's dying wish he be buried in his home town. He also asked Elave to give the box, and it's unknown contents, to his foster daughter Fortunata as a dowry.

As Elave recounts his time in the Holy Land with his master to the family, he voices his opinion of the faith. The clerk of the house, Aldwin, rushes off to Abbot Radulfus and charges Elave with heresy. The charge is also heard by Canon Gerbert, a visiting Augustinian from the Archbishop of Canterbury.

By the next morning, Aldwin is found dead and Elave is the chief suspect. Brother Cadfael and Sherriff Hugh Beringar scour the home, and the occupants, for clues to Aldwin's death. As the pieces come together, they discover the box is much more than what it seems.

Ellis does a wonderful job of showing how the Church worked in the summer of 1143 England. A heresy charge can't be heard and ruled upon by anyone. Even Canon Gerbert can't condemn the man. Bishop Robert de Clinton of Coventry becomes the judge because it is in his jurisdiction that the heresy occurred. I enjoyed learning through this book how the Church operated.

Hope you enjoy this cozy mystery.

Always a wonderful read! The history, characters and superb writing make this series so great.
Great story for Cadfael lovers. While the "Who" done it might have been obvious after a while, learning the exact nature of the McGuffin kept me interested throughout.
I’ve been a fan of Brother Cadfael
for a long time. I like the books the best.
Another great installment in an amazingly good series- i can't decide whether i like the mystery or historical context better they are both so engaging. These books are so well written i feel priviledged to read them- evocative narrative in a detailed and accurate historical setting. I'm learning english history by osmosis and it's fun. Start at the beginning of the series as characters and settings develop through the books.
I found it interesting in that envy exists in the halls of the religious! I think we forget that they are humans with the same doubts that the rest of us have. It is very well written. A cousin in Shropshire alerted me to the fact that the series about Brother Cadfael is on DVDs will be available through . Derek Jacobi stars in the series. Looking forward to that!
I like to think Ellis Peters is now free to pass through the centuries and check her facts first hand. Unlike most author's. Peters kept fresh the stories of Brother Cadfael. Here there is no forced efforts to fit cast to storyline. The tales flow as effortlessly as the river itself.
This 12th century mystery series by Ellis Peters takes place in a fog of civil war, where the English and Welsh were raiding each other’s borders and supporting one or another claimant to the English throne Empress Maud or King Stephen. In spite of the ongoing violence, the author suffuses her novels with a deep sense of peace and contentment in the monastic life. A monk from the Benedictine Abbey of Saint Peter and Saint Paul at Shrewsbury, Brother Cadfael, the ex-Crusader-turned herbalist is her solver of murders and mysteries of the heart. Ellis weaves a rich tapestry of his daily life on the war-torn Welsh border.

This seventeenth novel in a series of 21 mysteries, "The Heretic's Apprentice," begins in June 1143 as the monks are once again preparing to celebrate Saint Winifred's festival. As the Abbey's guest quarters begin to fill up with pilgrims, "a long, flat handcart came creaking in, towed by a thickset, grizzled countryman before, and pushed by a lean and travel-stained young man behind. The load it carried was covered by a dun-coloured cloak..."

One pilgrim at least, had arrived post mortem.

After a fuss over the dead man's religious beliefs, he is buried in consecrated ground. Elave, the young man who brought the body home bears a costly dowry gift to the dead man's foster daughter, Fortunata. Then Elave is clapped into the Abbey's prison cell when he too is accused of heresy.

When his accuser is found floating in the river, Elave is also accused of murder.

I enjoyed the mystery as well as the slowly burgeoning romance between Fortunata and the imprisoned Elave. Brother Cadfael is in top form as he fights to prove Elave's innocence and also solve the puzzle of Fortunata's mysterious dowry. At first it was a bit difficult to keep track of all the new characters, but the author made each of them uniquely alive. Here is Elave

"The young man lifted the modest roll of his possessions, and trudged somewhat wearily along behind the cortege, to vanish into the south archway of the cloister. He walked as if he were stiff and footsore, but bore himself erect and steadily, with no studied show of grief, though his face remained thoughtfully solemn, preoccupied rather with what went on in his own mind than what those around him here might be thinking."

It was William's dying wish he be buried in his home town. He also asked Elave to give the box, and it's unknown contents, to his foster daughter Fortunata as a dowry.
