I really enjoyed this series up until this book (the finale). It seemed to me the author was ready to move on to something else and wanted to end this as quickly as possible. Some major spoilers follow to illustrate my point, so stop reading now if you want the book to be a surprise. The book was similar to the last one in that it was mostly a military campaign. But unlike the last book, there did not seem to be any character development in this one. Kael gains power magically without any work and gets the elves of Forend to follow him without any real time spent with them. Up to this point, Lilwynn has not really shown much interest in Eidyn, but at the end of the book they come together without any real development in their relationship. The epilogue magically finds Kael a wife that I don't remember from any of the previous works. I wish the author had taken his time and written one more book to round out this series (taking time to develop relationships and justify/build Kael's power). I am a Christian, but I felt the ending moved the plot too close to a copy of the Bible and felt unoriginal. They are outmanned in the final battle but God comes in and saves the day, which felt like a copout. I wasn't sure who Aemmon was supposed to be at the end (he says "my father" in talking about Avra, but his father was Grelb? and he tells Amird "you know me", but how does he know him? I think I missed something there). Anyway, I think the series was still fairly enjoyable but the ending was a letdown.Tags : Amazon.com: The Mirror and the Maelstrom (The Seraphinium Book 4) eBook: Daniel McHugh: Kindle Store, ebook,Daniel McHugh,The Mirror and the Maelstrom (The Seraphinium Book 4),Nostr Publishing,FICTION Fantasy Dark Fantasy,FICTION Fantasy Epic
The Mirror and the Maelstrom The Seraphinium Book 4 eBook Daniel McHugh Reviews
Great character and plot development. I've very much enjoyed this series. I'm looking forward to much more from Mr. McHugh.
I really loved this series and I was sad that this was the last book. A series well worth reading
So sad to see it end. The first book was a little on the slow side setting up the characters, but I was quickly hooked and haven't even thought about picking up another series until this one ends! I truly enjoyed these
This is the last in the Seraphinium series. It is a fitting and enjoyable ending to the story. This book has more of the infighting and power struggles of the soldiers of Amrid the Deceiver. The final chapter in the series ties it closely to other morality based epic fantasies, like the Narnia series. I really enjoyed this book and the series as a whole.
A great story and easy read. I've enjoyed both the story and character progression. It can get frustrating from time to time, but it's well worth your time.
The battles of The Great War continue, and continue to excite! The fourth and final book of The Seraphinium continues in the fashion of the third. War and campaigning dominate the majority of the pages and never fail to entertain. I figured out a few of the ending parts earlier on but Daniel McHugh definitely kept me second guessing myself until the very end. I've loved every one of the books of The Seraphinium and am sad to see it end, but happy with the ending. I look forward to more from Mr. McHugh. What are you working on next?
Christian themes kick into high gear in this final installment.
I don't think this should be a particular turn off to those of other faiths, but it merits noting.
It's always nice to see a series completed, and it's an extra boon to have one tied up cleanly. The writing here remains strong, with likable characters and good plot movement. Several well foreshadowed individual conflicts come to a head and the follies of evil and merits of good are displayed without being too forceful.
I definitely recommend this series to others.
As always, I try to include a bit of criticism... I'm still a bit mystified as to Kael's precise genealogy. He's related to the throne of zodra, the court of the gray elves, the court of Astel, and he's the grandson or some such of the voice himself. I probably missed something... or maybe it would bear repeating for the thick-skulled like myself. )
I'd like to have seen him come into his element a little earlier in the series... using his powers a little more... being a bit less neurotically uncertain about what's going on around him... that might be just my personal preference.
Anyways... these books are great, and they'll be recommended to my kids as well when they're of age to read them. )
