Wow! What a great book! This book is different than any I have ever read--and I'm a voracious reader. It's fantasy and, yet, is firmly rooted in reality. Such a realness to these characters, even the nonhuman ones! I loved that the fantasy world was never allowed to overshadow the story and the characters.

This is a different type of fantasy than I've ever read! A different kind of book, one that will live with me forever. The characters are that real.

The main character, Holly Scruggs, who has been beaten down by her mother, is such an inspiration! She never allows herself to fall into self pity.

With the mysterious Theo's help, she discovers her true calling in life and the confidence she needs.

Without a doubt this book just made my top 10 list of favorite books ever. What an amazing gift Melissa Turner Lee has!

I tried to think of a book to compare this to and failed. However, the way The Earth Painter made me feel reminded me of Pride and Prejudice. It evoked feelings of satisfaction, joy, and, yes, love.

You will not want to put it down when you begin to read. When you finish the Kindle version, you'll want to buy the paperback, for the simple reason that when you glance at it on your bookshelf, you'll remember the great pleasure of reading it. And with that glance will come a happy sigh.

And, although all the loose ends are not tied up, happily for the readers, there is a sequel, The Man Painter.

I found, The Earth Painter, and instantly downloaded it and began reading. After reading a couple chapters, I knew I was hooked and bought book 2, The Man Painter.

I wasn't sure what to expect at first. As the story unfolded I thought it was going to be the author's interpretation of how God (the Sculptor) created the planet Earth using his disciples; the Painters - Earth, Water and Space, and the Sciences - Bio, Geo and Chem.

Now, I don't want to lose you here, and make you think 'Oh boy. This book just dipped it's pages on the side of science-fiction with a twist of theology.' By no means is that the case. This is a story of finding a long lost love you weren't sure even existed and at the same time, discovering yourself.

Theo's and Holly's paths converge in the high school auditorium. Holly arrives in a new school, in a class she didn't sign up for. Theo is sitting on the edge of the stage watching. Holly takes notice of Theo and from that moment on their lives change. Theo can't figure out what he did to make Holly notice him and Holly doesn't understand why no one else ever noticed Theo.

This two-book series will warm your heart, make you chuckle (Khai-Ree), irritate you a bit (Holly's Mom), make you smile and maybe cry. But most of all, it will open your mind to a new idea. It will make you think about creation. Even if that wasn't the author's intent (or maybe it was). It will broaden your senses and leave you wondering.

I thoroughly enjoyed both books in the Painter Series. And though the second book warns that the story clearly reads from a more adult point of view, it is very much still good for young adults and older teens to read. There is no gratuitous sex or graphic word-play at all to classify book 2 for 'mature audiences'.
This was a little different from my usual fantasy and paranormal stories. I found it refreshing and unique. It was almost like a folk tale. I enjoyed all the positive messages woven through out specifically geared towards young adults. Holly’s initial distaste for her appearance saddened me but her eventual acceptance of her freckles and red curly hair had me cheering. The author did a good job in bringing up the circle of domestic violence too.
Holly is drawn to Theo, a boy no one has ever noticed. Their friendship is sweet and full of potential, at least from Holly’s standpoint. The sciences, Bio and Chem seem to think different and find every opportunity to sway Theo from interacting with the human-Holly
Overall, quite a good story depicting those who the sculptor (God) selected as painters in creating the land, sky, and waters we live in. The sciences were a great add on.
