This is my new favorite series. Not only are they wonderful stories, but also a thorough introduction to and exploration of Tibetan culture and Buddhist practice. I have a Harvard degree in Asian Studies and a fairly extensive intellectual understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. These books give me an emotional and tactile experience of the practice. I love seeing Tibet through Shan's eyes.

Loved it! All of these books are written with so much admiration and respect for Tibet.
I am a big fan of this book series!
Another novel by Eliot Pattison about Inspector Shan Tao. I've enjoyed the four others I've read but this one is my favorite so far.
Pattison has become one of my favorite authors!
I love this series. I fell like I am in Tibet. This has been my favorite so far in the series. I'm on the next one Beautiful Ghost.
This is the third novel in the “Inspector Shan” series, which I have read so far in order. The series title is a misnomer, as Shan is no longer a policeman and these stories are hardly typical crime novels. Shan is a former investigator of corruption in Communist China who has been dismissed from his position and sent to prison camp in Tibet. There he becomes associated with Tibetan monks in the prison and enamored of their Buddhist philosophy. These events are described in novel 1, in which he is also released from the prison camp. In novels 2 and 3 he undertakes quests for these Buddhists while also seeking to solve murders associated with these quests. Unfortunately, the series has become somewhat formulaic. The overall theme is that the Chinese Communists are trying to exploit Tibetan resources while also converting Tibetan culture and religion to a model compatible with Communist ideology. Each story ultimately revolves around an attempt by a corrupt Chinese official to gain power and wealth by further manipulating an already corrupt system for gain. The stock characters then are the evil Chinese manipulators, a mass of Chinese collaborators, a few good Chinese, the stoic Tibetan monks, the benign Tibetan population and a few radical Tibetan insurgents. For good measure there is a well-meaning American or two in the mix.
The plots are very complex and often vague. The most interesting features of the novels are the descriptions of Tibet and the Tibetan culture and religion. However, these features will only hold interest for so long. This particular novel is too long and often drags in the middle. I cannot imagine where this series goes that encompasses several additional novels unless there is a significant change in the formula.
I really enjoy Pattison's Inspector Shan series novels because they work on several levels. First, they educate the reader about Tibetan culture. Second, they are intriguing mysteries. And, third, they are a damning indictment of the Chinese oppression of Tibet. In all cases, Tibetan culture forms the backbone of the mystery. In order to accomplish this, Pattison displays a masterful understanding of Tibetan culture and Buddhism (which are one and the same).
