Just when you think you know how the next book in "The Legend of Zero" series will go, Sara King amazingly weaves her magic to another direction you didn't anticipate. :-) This time we find our hero of this series, instead of battling aliens in space for Congress, Commander Zero, aka Joe Dobbs is now Earth bound. On a planet that has rejected him, by a Congress that has now betrayed him, fighting the Congressional planted hungry kreenit, and still dealing with the prophecy that has yet to be fulfilled. His devastated birthplace is forced back by Congress into the Stone Ages, Joe is now in a dog eat dog environment where only the strongest will survive. With no trained Congie ground crews to assist him, Joe is on his own with only his faithful Jane by his side.Earth we discover was not, accepting the takeover of their planet nor forced recruitment of their children quietly. Secretly they were developing their own kind of genetic weapons to fight back, until Congress discovers what they have been up too. Earth is quickly condemned in Congressional proportions; its technological centers, universities and bases destroyed, and then their cities are salted with hungry kreenit. A quarter billion human Congies are thrown back on a planet that hates them, where they may be to be the only humans to survive the devastation to serve Earth's penance for a Sacred Turn.
Miss King once again does not disappoint with her creating a new wonderful mind blowing cast of characters, as well as reuniting those from Joes past. It is so hard not to give out spoilers here, as I do not want to ruin the unveiling of the multiple twists and turns of this book. So let me just say that Zero's Return is a fresh, unpredictable, exhilarating emotional experience as the story of Joe Dobbs unfolds yet another wonderful layer. The dark side of the creation of Earth's secret weapon was reveled, and made me gasp. Joe will be introduced to those dragon-slaying innocents mentioned in the earlier books, who love of all things...cookies! He'll finally meet someone that as they say, gets his motor running. Is she the promised soul mate he has waited his whole life for, the one the fortune teller told him about? Nothing will be simple as Miss King is unafraid to even throw Joe under the bus and gives him a challenge that has the ability to crush him with a single thought.
Leaping Furgs, neither Earth nor it inhabitants is what Joe or I expected at all, BRAVO MISS KING.
Once again like Forging Zero and Zero Recall, "The Legend of Zero: Zero's Return" had me turning eagerly to the next page as Miss King drew me into her characters heads, all the while giving me a book I will long remember and want to revisit again and again.

Zero Return The Legend of ZERO Book 3 eBook Sara King Reviews
I'm a sucker for character interaction and there were some in here that will probably bring me back for book 4 but the characters in this book were not very true to form. This was a haphazard attempt at best
Spoiler alert. And I am being a bit critical because this was the poorest of the 3 novels so far.
Lab rats escape secret lab. Lab rats meet Alice. Alice accepts a group of illiterate naked adults as normal. 11c learns to make cookies from Alice. WTH? I almost deleted the story based on that chapter alone.
Joe and Shael meet up with the lab rats. Shael has animosity toward Earthlings. Shael is a Jreet Prince warrior... 11C makes cookies. Shael "Look Joe they made cookies!" Again, WTH?
Joe constantly refers to 12A and the lab rats as friends? Constant manipulation. Constant scolding. Occasionally getting his mind bashed around. Friends?
12A puts Joe to sleep. Mike and the gang subdue all of the them and takes things. Joe gets loose and gets their stuff back. 12A hasn't learned a thing and puts them all back in the same situation believing that Mike is a swell dude. When Mike shows up with a gun to 12A's head, WHY THE H*** DIDN'T HE PUT MIKE AND COMPANY TO SLEEP? He lets Joe know that "There's a problem". Really? Joe shows up and kills everyone.
Now on to Rat. A Congie with 50+ turns of experience gets caught by surprise by a handful of escaped convicts and gets tied up. Then she manages to get loose and kill all but one. Then she gets caught again by Sam/Slade who lures her in with gum. It would have been a bit more believable had he brought along a free puppy.
Geesh this was a haphazard read. I'd recommend reading the 1 star reviews to get an idea of the faults before buying this one.
After the last book which I loved, I was excited for the continuation of the story. Rarely have I been so disappointed. Another reviewer went into length about the problems in the relationship between 12-A & Joe so I won't cover that again except to say I never thought of them as friends despite Joe's constant referring to 12-A as such.
What I didn't like Joe grumbles that the People never go anywhere. That fits the book nicely. There isn't any plot. No really progression except for SHAEL. Even then it takes the entire book for her to come to her senses & that's when the story ends.
So what happens? Arguments. Lots & lots of arguments. Between Joe & 12-A. Between Joe & SHAEL. The SAME arguments over & over & over & over again. By the last 3/4 of the book, I was almost skimming the arguments b/c I knew who was going to say what & how it would end.
The second book had themes of growing as a person, honoring friends, understanding each other in spite of differences & this book lacked all of that. And humor. One place there was some humor. The rest of it is a boring, depressing series of clashes of personalities.
Worst of all, the book is just a set-up for the next book. Really. You could write a short story covering the key events in this book & that would suffice.
I hate to write such a negative review, but I just can't get past my extreme disappointment. I didn't want to put book 2 down & was so enthralled. This book, I had to force myself to finish. I'll give King another chance or two with other books. I know she CAN write really great books so I'll go looking for them.
