The Massacre of Mankind Authorised Sequel to The War of the Worlds eBook Stephen Baxter
Boring and disappointing. As I kid War of the Worlds was my favorite book and movie, even though the movie with Gene Barry didn't follow the book. I was excited to see this available but what a let down. Not scary, way too much fluff, and a silly ending. I never got into the characters and really didn't care if they lived or died. Pass up this bummer.Tags : The Massacre of Mankind: Authorised Sequel to The War of the Worlds - Kindle edition by Stephen Baxter. The Massacre of Mankind Authorised Sequel to The War of the Worlds eBook Stephen Baxter Reviews
Baxter did an excellent job of creating a sequel to The War of the Worlds! The novel was true to Wellsian Universe in every way. Great work! Wells himself would have been pleased.
Not a sequel, but a launch into a complex, unredeeming new fantasy. Not worth the effort. Needs more discipline, please
Well written and verbose. Archaic English in style and grammar but interesting. The reader must be ready to interpret the meaning of past events as the early years indicate certain situations. A scientific fictional account of old England. Keep that in mind.
I read this because I had previously read Stephen Baxter's "The Time Ships". I found this book readable, but it really didn't draw me in the way The Time Ships did, The Massacre of Mankind feels more like a patchwork than a cohesive piece, and there is a certain repetitive inevitability about the book as a whole. I think Baxter does an excellent job of recreating the feel of the "prequels" - the original works - so I think perhaps this is a natural consequence of being true to his source.
Anyway, I went straight on to another Baxter book, so I wasn't too unhappy with this one!
I finally got around to reading the original two years ago and wanted that adventure to continue. I was not disappointed. It was a good read and highly entertaining. My only disappointment was that I couldn't "see" most of the places in England so it took a bit of imagination to picture them. Enjoyed the book tho!
There are better riffs on the Wells classic. This "official" sequel (whatever that really means seeing as Wells has been dead so long all his works - including the War of the Worlds - are out of copyright) does a good impression of Wells style and extrapolating from his original. It IS the world HG crafted so long ago. But... there's none of the terror of the original, the Martians appear hardly at all and, when they do, it is for page or less. If - like me - you are a WotW fan and read lots of sequels, this will keep your interest. But I can't imagine it thrilling anyone. There are sequels which are less well wrote or researched that are hugely more entertaining...
In this sequel to H.G. Wells' classic "The War of the Worlds", author Stephen Baxter has continued the story.
Fourteen years have passed since the original Martian invasion. On Earth, technology has improved, and new ideas have been gained from studying abandoned Martian equipment. But on Mars, technology has improved as well. The Martians have learned from their mistakes and now, a new, much larger group of cylinders is approaching Earth.
Told through the eyes of Julie Elphinstone, she describes the landings of the Martians. At first, the Martians land once again in England, but as the story progresses, it turns out that the Martians have one goal in mind total domination of the Earth. Cylinders are landing in China, Africa, Australia, and the United States. Earth weapons are still almost totally ineffective against the invaders. It is up to Julie, the ever-studious and scholarly Walter Jenkins, and others introduced throughout to find a way to stop the Martians before it's too late. The massacre of mankind has begun. Can it be stopped?
I read the original "War of the Worlds" many years ago, and it remains one of my favorite books. Overall, I liked this book, but I did have difficulty with the story in some parts. I thought the idea of using Julie as the narrator was a good one, and the numerous characters included in the story added their own unique talents. I feel that the narrative could have been better, however.
I recommend this book to science fiction fans and readers who have read the original "War of the Worlds".
